Jason Atherton was the first ever British chef to complete a stage at Spain’s famous El Bulli restaurant. Having worked under Pierre Koffmann, Nico Ladenis and Gordon Ramsay as Executive Chef at Verre in Dubai, it was time for Jason to take centre stage and thus came maze. His daily changing menu, many of the dishes which are cooked on a charcoal robata grill, wood oven or on the plancha are prepared using the relatively unfamiliar method of line cooking to his kitchen: a process favoured in many top American kitchens.
In addition to winning a Michelin star, the past 4 years have seen maze sweep the boards to win an unprecedented number of awards including: Best New Restaurant at the Time Out Eating and Drinking Awards 2005; Restaurant of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Chef of the Year at the Harpers and Queen Restaurant Awards; Best Kitchen at the Tatler Restaurant Awards 2005 and Square Meal’s BMW Restaurant of the Year. Maze was named Best Breakthrough Restaurant at the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards organised by Restaurant Magazine in April 2007. In 2008, saw Jason win BBC 2 Great British Menu, Jason also won Outstanding Chef of the Year at the London Restaurant Awards 2008, Maze was Top UK Restaurant 2008 in the National Restaurant Awards 2008.
Both Maze and Jason’s recipes have appeared widely in magazines and newspapers, and he demonstrates regularly on food shows in the UK and abroad as well as on television shows such as the hit series ‘Saturday Kitchen’. June 2008 saw Jason win the third hugely popular series of BBC2’s Great British Menu and last year saw Jason judging the South East heat of BBC 2’s Great British Menu. Jason lives in west London with his wife and daughter.
